Bafana Bafana Coach Gordon Igesund is using what little time he has away from coaching the country’s national soccer team to help South Africa’s sickest children at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. At a special visit to patients and staff at the Hospital today, the Children’s Hospital Trust announced that Igesund had signed up as an Ambassador for the Trust.
Igesund is better known for coaching championship-winning teams’ pitch-side, but today he showed his motivational ability at the bedside of children at the largest, stand-alone tertiary hospital in sub-Saharan Africa dedicated entirely to children. The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is respected internationally as the most trusted paediatric institution in Africa.
The Children’s Hospital Trust’s Ambassadors programme provides the perfect opportunity for well-known and respected individuals like Igesund to give back to the community in a meaningful way. Trust Ambassadors are not remunerated and choose to give of their time to make a difference in the lives of children and contribute to the future of the country. While Igesund will continue to call the plays on the soccer field, he will now extend his responsibilities to help the Trust in its efforts to fundraise for critical projects at the Hospital and within the province.
“I visited the Hospital with the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of AFCON in December 2012 and was totally blown away by the caring environment and the tremendous work the staff here do in caring for these very sick children,” says Igesund. “As a father myself, I couldn’t turn down the chance to get involved in helping raise awareness, on behalf of the Children’s Hospital Trust, of the excellent work the Hospital does.”
As a Trust Ambassador, Igesund will join existing Ambassadors JP Duminy, the Big Sports Management Golf Team and Dan Skinstad as a public representative for the Children’s Hospital Trust by attending fundraising events and spending quality time with the Hospital’s brave little patients.
Igesund, a Durban native, is the most successful football coach in South African history and has also played for teams such as Durban United, AmaZulu and in Austria with Admira Wacker. His new role as Trust Ambassador proves that this sportsman is passionate and has a big heart on, and off, the field.
