Today, 15th of May 2014, marks the opening of the all-new Woolworths Childsafe Research and Educational Centre on the premises of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town – the first of its kind in Africa. The Woolworths Trust donated R1.45million of the R6.4million cost to build and equip the Centre to the Children’s Hospital Trust.
Childsafe South Africa is a non-profit organisation which advocates for children’s safety nationally and has played an integral role in changes to South African legislation regarding firearm ownership and seat belt use in motor vehicles. This new Centre will house the staff and activities of Childsafe SA, from which they will continue to conduct research, implement educational programmes and campaign for child safety throughout South Africa as they have for the last 35 years.
The Woolworths Childsafe Research and Educational Centre is easily accessible by caregivers of patients at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, especially those who have had their children treated at the Hospital’s Trauma Unit due to household accidents. The Centre will incorporate a safety demonstration room with child safe designs and furnishing to educate the general public on how to safeguard their homes to prevent avoidable injuries to children.
