The past weekend saw the end of the 2012 Saturday Surgeries initiative at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, to reduce the Hospital’s long waiting list for patients in need of lifchanging surgical procedures. Mediclinic Southern Africa funded this R200 000 project, in partnership with the Children’s Hospital Trust, to provide an extra day of surgery on Saturdays over a 12 week period for elective procedures, which are not usually conducted over weekends.
The initiative benefitted a total of 87 young patients of which 26 General, 46 ENT and 15 Plastic surgeries were performed with a mere 16 overnight stays.
The Hospital’s waiting list has been radically decreased from a patient waiting list of 6 months to a year, to now only three to four weeks waiting period for elective surgery and Western Cape Government: Health Minister Theuns Botha says that this kind of public-private partnership is exactly in line with the Department’s future strategy.
Mediclinic Southern Africa’s funding covered the administration costs and the Hospital carried the costs for use of services and recuperation space, such as operating theatres, consumables and inpatient care
